WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A former Florida Atlantic University police officer faces a mandatory life sentence after being convicted of killing an escort.

Jimmy Dac Ho, 50, was found guilty of first-degree murder and kidnapping Thursday.

Police said Ho fatally shot Sheri Carter, 29, at her Boynton Beach apartment in 2011.

Ho, who was fired after his arrest, claimed he only went to the apartment out of curiosity and accidentally shot Carter during a struggle when she demanded money from him after he backed out of a planned sexual encounter.

Prosecutors rejected claims that the shooting was an accident or self-defense. They said Ho handcuffed Carter before shooting her twice.

His sentencing is scheduled for May 2.
