Fort Lauderdale police spokesman Keven Dupree said the couple met at the church while Wellny was volunteering at the parish and the girl was a youth church member.

Dupree said the couple engaged in numerous phone calls and met with each other on several occasions from Aug. 2014 to Nov. 2014.

Dupree said Wellny had sex with the girl on several occasions, and the victim became pregnant with Wellny's child.

Authorities said Wellny admitted to having sex with the girl, but said he was unsure if the baby, who was born in July 2014, was his. A DNA test taken after the baby was born confirmed that Wellney was the father.

Wellny turned himself in to police with his lawyer present on Monday.
