Fort Lauderdale police identify driver who killed pedestrian, injured cyclist

Police investigate two crashes on West Broward Boulevard

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The driver who killed a pedestrian and injured a cyclist in Fort Lauderdale is from Miami, police said Sunday.

A few days before his 45th birthday, Frank Isaac Pais Munoz was driving a 1997 Nissan Altima, when he crashed twice in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night.

About 8:35 p.m., Munoz was traveling eastbound on West Broward Boulevard when he struck a pedestrian near Northwest Seventh Avenue.

"An unidentified pedestrian stepped from the center median into on-coming traffic," Detective DeAnn Greenlaw said in a press release. When Munoz struck him, the pedestrian fell "backwards, striking his head on the curb of the median."

Munoz continued to drive. Police said that in an attempt to return to the scene, he made a U-turn about two blocks later. That was when he hit Russel Franklin, 62, who was cycling.

Greenlaw said both crashes were still under investigation and asked any one who may have witnessed any of the crashes to call 954-828-5754.
