PARKLAND, Fla. – A funeral was held Friday morning for a 21-year-old woman killed in a wrong-way crash on the Sawgrass Expressway.
Mourners gathered at Mary Help of Christians Church to remember Marisa Catronio.
Catronio was a passenger inside Kaitlyn Ferrante's car when it was hit head on early Sunday morning by a vehicle driven by Kayla Mendoza, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
"I found out when the police knocked on my door at 3:30 in the morning, telling me my daughter was in emergency surgery," said Ferrante's mother, Christine.
The crash killed Catronio.
Ferrante, 21, died Monday. Her heart was given to a patient needing an organ donor.
"Her heart is beating in somebody else right now and that gives us great comfort to know that her heart is out there," said Christine Ferrante.
"I am mad. I punched a lot of walls, but I am trying to stay strong for my mom so she doesn't feel worse," said her brother, Nico.
"She didn't just pass away. She was taken from me," added her sister, Ashley. "If I could just hear her again. Anything. If I could just see her smile again."
A funeral for Ferrante will be held Saturday afternoon at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Coral Springs.
Mendoza, 20, suffered serious injuries. She was listed in fair condition Friday, said Sgt. Mark Wysocky.
In the weeks leading up to the crash, she made several references to marijuana and drinking on her Twitter account, which was verified by an attorney representing Ferrante's family.

At 11:03 p.m. Saturday, almost three hours before the crash, Mendoza tweeted, "2 drunk 2 care."
"It's crazy the thing that happened with her. She didn't seem like that type of girl," said her neighbor, Javier Hernandez.
Wysocky said the agency is aware of Mendoza's tweets and is investigating.
