Girl asks killer stepdad to let her say goodbye to dying mom during 911 call

Domestic violence cases increase in Hialeah, El Nuevo Herald reports

HIALEAH, Fla. – It had been a few weeks since Roberto Calixto Gomez and Marcia Vázquez  split up. They had been married for about a decade.

Vázquez, 49, was planning to start a new life at 416 E 27th St., Apt 2G, in Hialeah. But instead that was where Gomez, 50, would end her life on the morning of Aug. 15.

"The couple had no children in common," Hialeah Sgt. Car Zogby told Local 10 News.  "Vazquez' 14-year-old daughter was the only other person in the apartment at the time of the shooting. She was not injured."

The teen called 911 and told police she heard a loud noise, walked into the room and saw her mother on the floor. She was covered in blood.

During the 911 call El Nuevo Herald shared on Sound Cloud, the girl pleaded with her stepfather to allow her to go back into the room to kiss her mom goodbye.

"She is dead ... I cannot get inside," the girl told police. Gomez didn't allow her in and killed himself.

Vázquez's murder is a reflection of an increase in domestic violence cases in Hialeah, according to an investigation by El Nuevo Herald reporters' Enrique Flor and Brenda Medina.

Lourdes Mendoza, who handles Hialeah police's cases of domestic violence said the 11 percent increase -- from 810 cases in 2013 to 899 in 2014 -- is a reflection of the high cost of rents in Miami-Dade County.

"Many victims area afraid," Mendoza told El Nuevo Herald. "For fear of their financial situation, they are not reporting the aggressions."
