FISHER ISLAND, Fla. – A large group of migrants is believed to have been smuggled onto Fisher Island Friday morning, Todd Bryant of the U.S. Border Patrol said.
Bryant, the division chief of the Miami sector, said Border Patrol agents were contacted about 7:30 a.m. by Miami police about a group of migrants who might have been smuggled onto Fisher Island.
Fisher Island security notified police after 16 migrants came ashore. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the migrants consisted of 13 men and three women. All were said to be in good health, and they were given food and water.
Bryant said a go-fast boat was found in the vicinity where the migrants were found.
The migrants, who are all from Haiti, were taken to the Dania Beach Border Patrol Station.
Multiple agencies are investigating the incident, including the Border Patrol, Miami police, Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard.
The U.S. Border Patrol asks that all suspicious activity be reported to 1-877-772-8146.
