Hair care concerns exercising women

About 40% of woman with textured hair say they skip workouts because of hair concerns

MIAMI ā€“ There are a number of obstacles that may keep people from working out, and for women, hair tends to be a reason.

Researchers found about 40 percent of women with textured hair avoid exercising because of their concerns.

Rashida Bartley, of Miami, is not one of those women. She bikes, swims, runs, and does yoga.

In a few months, Bartley will be competing in the Iron Man Triathlon. But instead of answering questions about her health regiment, most women what to know about her hair.

"They say, 'What do I do with my hair,' especially with swimming," said Bartley. "Sometimes it bothers me a little bit because I want to say that I do what everyone else does with their hair. I style it and wash it.Ā At the same time, I understand it is an issue for women."

Simone Hilton with Natural Trend Setters in Tamarac says that she tries to give her clients other options for the week, especially if they work out.

"You have to plan it out with your regiment," she said.

Hilton says if hair is short, tie it up.Ā If it's long, make sure you have a style that will look good wet or dry. She also says some athletes take it a step further with braids or weaves to shield the hair underneath.

Hilton also recommends non-sulfate shampoos if you work out several times a week. It will help to keep your hair from over drying.

There's also the "Save Your Do Wrap" developed by actress Nicole Ari Parker. It absorbs sweat during a work out.

As for Bartley, she's determined to stay in shape, and is encouraging others to do the same.
