Urban League of Broward County releases health report on African Americans in Broward County

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Urban League of Broward County released a report detailing the health of African-American families in the county.

According to the report, the zip code 33311, which includes parts of Fort Lauderdale, Lauderhill, and Lauderdale Lakes, has a diabetes rate 210 percent higher than the county rate and an unhealthy food index 111 percent higher than the county rate.

African-American infants in the county die at a rate three times higher than their white or Hispanic counterparts.

The death rate from HIV/AIDS is six times higher among African Americans than white or Hispanic adults.

The organization spent six months gathering information from various community health care provides for the report.
