Dermatologist offers tips for healthy skin
A dermatologist offers tips on how to maintain a healthy looking face after over indulging during the holiday season.
Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd, a dermatologist, says a new year can lead to a renewed interest in skin care.
"It's really common for my patients to come in in January and kind of want to rejuvenate their skin," she said.
Robin Martino quickly noticed the effects over indulgence had on her face.
"There's parties. There's a lot of baking going on. There's a lot of popping the cork every day versus just Friday and Saturday," she said. "I noticed the texture wasn't as soft and I was very puffy a lot of times."
Drinking too much alcohol can dehydrate skin, making it look rough and dull.
"For the dull skin, I would recommend a hydrating facial," Woolery-Lloyd said. "It's a quick fix. It's something you can do immediately and your skin will feel hydrated and, of course, you have to follow that up with at home care."
Woolery-Lloyd suggests using a heavier moisturizer at night.
Alcohol can also cause puffy eyes, and dermatologists suggest placing moist tea bags on the eyes, pressing tablespoons chilled in the freezer on the eyelids, or using chilled slices of cucumber, which have an anti-inflammatory and cooling effect.
Woolery-Lloyd says a diet rich in fatty acids helps skin look its best.
"In fact, there was one study where women were supplemented with flaxseed oil and after 12 weeks, they had increased moisture content and decreased roughness in their skin," she said.
Antioxidants like Vitamin C and green tea can prevent free radical damage and improve skin texture and radiance.
Eating too many baked goods can result in skin problems because sugar can fuel break outs. Limiting your sugar intake and keeping topical acne treatments on hand helps combat the problem.
