SteriShoe emits ultraviolet light, kills fungus
For five years, Isabella Jamis-Giraldo has battled toe nail fungus.
"It started with a little itch. It wasn't really bad at first. I didn't think much of it," said Jamis-Giraldo. "I would put little medicine here and there but then it eventually got worse."
"There are probably a hundred different things you can apply topically to nails and the reason there are a hundred is because none of them work," said Dr. Eric Weinstein, a podiatrist.
Weinstein cleared the fungus using a laser treatment but Jamis-Giraldo was worried the condition would come back.
"Once we get rid of the fungus with the laser, then we have to do a little bit of maintenance and that means perhaps a topical on the nails to act as a protective barrier, to not get re-infected, but more importantly, we have to address the shoe which the toes sit in on a day to day basis," said Weinstein.
Weinstein suggested Jamis-Giraldo buy a SteriShoe, which emits an ultraviolet light that kills fungus or bacteria that's in the shoes.
"It also helps with foot odor because the bacteria in shoes is a contributing factor to foot odor, so people with foot odor, nothing like a SteriShoe to basically sterilize the inside of your shoe," said Weinstein.
Users only need to put the device into closed toe shoes and turn it on. The SteriShoe automatically shuts off after 45 minutes.
"Ideally, it's recommended to use it every day after you use those shoes, so when you put the shoe on the next morning, you can have confidence you won't be getting re-infected by what's breeding in your show," said Weinstein.
"It dries it up in there so I'm really happy with it," said Jamis-Giraldo.
The SteriShoe costs $129 for a pair.
Doctors said keeping your feet dry is also vital to keeping fungus at bay. Some people, including the elderly, people with diabetes or circulation problems, and those who are immunocompromised, are at a higher risk for fungal infections.
