Camp teaches underprivileged kids healthy eating

Peacock Foundation gives $30K donation to Centro Mater Center for summer camps

MIAMI – A non-profit organization runs a wellness camp for hundreds of underprivileged children, giving them an unforgettable summer experience.

Children at the Centro Mater Center Wellness Summer Camps learned how to grow vegetables and raced across the playground when Local 10's Kristi Krueger visited.

"The activities that we do is to educate them, to form, so that they can create healthy habits that they can take and grow with them, take them home," said Yannet Amador with the Centro Mater Center. "That helps to integrate those activities into their daily lives so they can do it with their friends, their family, at home, during the weekends."

A $30,000 donation from the Peacock Foundation paid for partial scholarships at the camp. Parents who sent their children there were thrilled.

"I really like the way the curriculum is established because they are having fun and they're exercising not knowing that they're actually doing physical activities, which helps them a lot," said Maria Hernandez.

"We go through their nutrition and we go through their basic food groups so they know what to eat and when to eat it because you can't just eat everything every day," added Robert Fuentes.

The kids enjoyed the camp, too.

"I become active and I'm here with my friends," said Yelina Villatoro.

"We can play basketball, soccer, every sport that you like," added Pablo Aybo.
