Hialeah apartment building evacuated because of fire

Authorities believe lightning struck building

HIALEAH, Fla. – A Hialeah apartment building was evacuated Wednesday afternoon because of a fire.

The fire was reported at 5400 W. 21st Court.

Hialeah Fire Department Capt. Cesar Espinosa said firefighters extinguished the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but authorities believe lightning struck the building on the roof of the fourth floor.

"It looks pretty much destroyed," witness Rick Sanchez said. "The roof is almost caving in."

Firefighters said the fire penetrated an attic that all units share.

Four units were damaged from the fire, and several families are now displaced.

No injuries were reported.
