Hit and run victim remembered by friends, classmates at candlelight vigil

Kaely Camacho killed on the way to school

MIAMI – News of 13-year-old Kaely Camacho's unexpected death spread quickly Friday at Southwood Middle School.

"Everybody was crying and they couldn't believe it was her because she was such a sweet, innocent girl and she didn't deserve any of it," Samantha Gwilliam, one of Kaely's friends said.

It was a spontaneous decision to light candles in her honor Friday night in Palmetto Bay. Kaely's fellow students felt they had to do something to show her how much they will miss her.

"Some other people came up and talked about how she was co-editor of the yearbook and how sad it is that she won't be able to see her work come out," Samantha said.

Kaely was on her way to school with her older sister and father when police said Sandor Guillen came flying down a lane reserved only for public buses. The impact was so intense, it crumbled the back end of the Camacho family's van. Guillen's SUV stopped nearly a block away from where he hit them. Then he took off, however, police were able to catch and arrest him. Kaely did not make it.

"He should really be charged with some major stuff because she really hadn't done anything with her life yet," Samantha said. "She just found out she was going to be on the Palmetto cheer team and she was really excited about that."

Police have charged Guillen with several crimes, including DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide.
