SOUTH FLORIDA ā Most air travelers leaving Wednesday for the Thanksgiving holiday can expect conditions to be in their favor at South Florida's two major airports during the nation's busiest travel week.
Still, South Florida's airports were seeing some delays, some due to the snowfall coming up north.
As of 9 p.m., Miami International Airport reported 13 delays and no cancellations. Meanwhile, Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport reported 179 delays, 90 of which were departures and 89 of which were arriving flights. There were also 10 cancellations.
All delays and cancellations reported were due to weather. Delays at FLL were up to 6 hours, 30 minutes in duration.
Earlier in the day, many travelers at MIA told Local 10 News they were happy to be traveling in the morning and were worried about the domino effect if they were traveling later. Some people even said they changed their flights to get out of the airport earlier.
"I came in from Washington D.C.," said Christopher Anderson, who arrived at MIA Wednesday morning.Ā "I was planning on coming here at 1:45 p.m., but with all the alerts about the snow, I switched my flight back to 7 a.m."
MIA officials say they expect the busiest days to be this Saturday, Sunday and Monday. More than 127,000 people are expected travel on each of those days.
FLL officials expect Wednesday and Sunday to be its busiest travel days. The Broward County Aviation anticipates 72,000 passengers a day as available airline seats are up 5.7 percent compared to last year.
