HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A South Florida animal hospital that was caring for a dog severely burned by her owner's ex-boyfriend, police said, is no longer accepting donations.
Thanks to the generous donations made to Hollywood Animal Hospital for Moon's recovery, the 1-year-old pit bull's estimate for care has been met.
The dog suffered second-degree burns throughout the majority of her body after Alain Williams, 27, poured scalding water on her body following a domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend Sunday, police said.
Mariya Facca, the dog's owner, said she was at work when Williams injured her pet and said he texted her saying he had poured hot water on the dog because she had broken up with him.
Facca claims that Williams has gotten physical with both her and his sister in the past.
"Burning the skin off an animal is really just beyond anyone's imagination of what the dog went through," said Broward County Judge John Hurley during Williams' bond court hearing on Tuesday.
Moon was given oxygen therapy, blood transfusions and had her burns cleaned and bandaged. Veterinarians said she is doing better, but the loss of proteins seen in burn victims and the risk of kidney failure are still a threat.
"Moon has a wonderful disposition for having endured such a tragedy," said Dr. Amanda Pinder. "While she has a long road of care ahead of her, baring complications, our prognosis for her is good."
Hurley said the dog was burned on 75 percent of her body.
Williams is charged with tormenting/mutilating an animal, criminal mischief and battery on a police officer.
