Hollywood man accused of trying to set family members on fire

Thomas Cosmo Varricchio, 49, faces charges in 2 fires since 2011

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A South Florida man is facing multiples charges, including attempted murder, after attempting to set two of his family members on fire at a home in Hollywood on Sunday, police said.

According to an incident report, Thomas Cosmo Varricchio, 49, threw lighter fluid on two people who were sitting on a couch.

Police said a fire was started but none of the victims were burned.

According to the report, a woman told officers that Varricchio, who she said suffers from bipolar disorder, was off his medication and began destroying things around the home.

She said she tried to leave but was thrown to the floor by Varricchio. Police said the woman appeared to have a broken wrist and was taken to Memorial Hospital Pembroke.

Varricchio also faces a charge of arson for an incident at the home from September 2011.

In that case, police said Varricchio was drunk when got into a verbal argument with a woman at the home and sparked a small fire in the grass in the front yard.

Police said the fire was quickly put out, but Varricchio then sparked another fire by the bottom of the front door.

No injuries were reported in either fire.
