Homeless veteran finds new home in time for holidays

South Florida homeowner helps Air Force veteran after Local 10 News report

CUTLER BAY, Fla. – A few weeks ago, Local 10 News worked to help veterans find homes in time for the holidays and one Air Force veteran's wish came true thanks to a South Florida homeowner.

Wanda Reynolds was pleased to welcome veteran Raul Suarez to his new home Monday.

Following Local 10 News' Home for Holidays fundraiser, Reynolds decided it was time for her to step up to the plate.

"I saw it on Channel 10 that they were trying to find homes for the veterans for the homeless for the holidays," she said. "So I called to find out about it and they found a (prospective candidate) for me. He came over and we interviewed, and it's a done deal."

Suarez is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and fell on hard times after his last enlistment. But thanks to the kindness of a stranger, he has a roof over his head and a new lease on life.

"I was excited and started thinking there is still good people out there," Suarez said.

Ron Book of the homeless Trust has been there every step of the way and knows firsthand the impact this has on our community and our veterans.

"Our community has responded in such a significant way, and as you know, a couple hundred landlords offered us the opportunity to house people like Raul," Book said. "But being here with Wanda today really makes a difference."
