How can you get more bang for your buck at South Florida casinos?

Ninety percent of all money spent in a casino is spent on slots, so the question is: Where are the winners?

"Your first steps (when walking into a casino) should be to the players club window to get a players club card," said Nick Sortal, Sun Sentinel's gambling writer.

Sortal said earning points on that card will get you perks, including free play, which gives you more chances to win.

He said payout percentages at all south Florida casinos, including Native American casino's, average very close to 92 percent.

"Is there a luckiest casino in South Florida? I know you would like to say it is yours," Local 10's Todd Tongen said.

"There absolutely is not the luckiest casino in South Florida," said Mike Deluca Jr., Mardi Gras Casino slot director.

Deluca said another myth is that there are "loose slots that pay more often," or "tight machines" that hit winners less.

"Slot machines are based on the random number generators," Deluca said. "So if a slot machine wins today for $10,000, which is it's top award, tomorrow or the next person has the same ability to win that $10,000 jackpot as the person that just did."

But experts say there are ways of upping your odds by how much you wager.

"Casinos are set up to reward people who gamble more," Sortal said. "If you go to a $1 slot machine, for example, that will have a 97 or 98 percent payback rate. If you go to a penny slot, sometimes those payback rates are as low as 85 percent."

Also, the way you play can increase your chances of winning a bigger jackpot.

"Go to the lowest denomination you can afford to play the max bet on," Deluca said. "So if you bet just one credit, which is $1, you have the ability to win $2,000. If you bet 3 credits, which is $3, you have the ability to make $15,000; that's a big difference. That's a huge difference, so I want to play three credits. It is worth the gamble. Or you could just lose."

Mardi Gras has actually paid the largest Florida casino racetrack jackpot in state history.

Three years ago a man played 50 cents on a progressive quarter slot machine. He won $243,000.

"Is he still a customer?" Tongen asked.

"He is still a customer, absolutely," Deluca said.

"Does he still play that machine?" Tongen asked.

"That machine is no longer here," Deluca said.

So what should one play if they want to win big money?

"Life-changing money?" Deluca said. What do I play? You have got to play the progressive slot machine. Progressives are multiple slot machines linked together."

And because more players are contributing to the jackpot it is much higher.

Local 10 also found out video poker has the highest winning percentage of any casino game. Provided you are playing the game with the right strategy you can see up to 98 to 99 percent payouts.
