Hundreds of people in Doral to protest against Venezuelan president's policies

DORAL, Fla. – Opponents of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro took to the streets Wednesday in Venezuela for a protest against the embattled socialist leader.

Meanwhile, a protest is also being held in Doral, where hundreds of people are expected to protest throughout the day.

Local 10 News reporter Christian De La Rosa was inside El Arepazo 2 Wednesday morning as a growing crowd chanted for the end of Maduro's government.

The demonstration is going on as thousands of people are gathering in the streets of Venezuela.

The opposition movement has been escalating for some time now against Maduro's socialist policies and the country's economic crisis.

De La Rosa spoke to one man, who said his mother has gone without food or medicine.

"I can tell you, I help my mother (who is) 94 years old," Ernesto Ackerman said. "I have to send her food (and) toilet paper from here, from the United States, so she can have it there."

Maria Morin said her family back home is out protesting what they say is a rising dictatorship.

"Things there are worse than Cuba," Morin said. "If they don't fight, if they don't pressure, things will get even worse."

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) said he's very concerned over the potential violence from Maduro's government used to shut down protestors.

Government supporters in Venezuela are holding their own counter demonstration.
