Hundreds of people receive citizenship Friday in Coconut Creek

Immigrants sworn in on World Refugee Day

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – Two hundred people representing 44 countries filled the Omni Auditorium at Broward College's North Campus in Coconut Creek as they became United States Citizens.

Among them was Amaury Ramos, a Cuban refugee who came to the United States five years ago with the goal of becoming a citizen of this country.

It's fitting that the day he said his Oath of Allegiance to the United States was also World Refugee Day.

Ramos was emotional as he said "This has always been my dream. Now I can fulfill my commitment to this country and pave the way for my family. I am so grateful."

Many of the people who were naturalized Friday have spent much of their lives on American soil and now get to truly live the American dream.

Most said, with the an election year just around the corner, they are most excited to exercise their right to vote.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) employees have taken on a new age approach to the celebration, asking the new citizens to tweet and hashtag their photos #NewUScitizen.
