Inmates attempt to smuggle drugs into Pompano Beach jail

3 accused of conspiring to possess designer drug NBOMe

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A former Broward County employee is facing federal charges after he tried to mail synthetic drugs to inmates at a jail in Pompano Beach, deputies said.

William Hahne, 56, of Fort Lauderdale, Gregory Golden, 41, and Dean Aubol, 35, are all facing felony charges of conspiring to possess the designer drug NBOMe, which they're accused of trying to smuggle into Joseph V. Conte Facility.

"People do strange things when there's pending charges,  but he did something above and beyond anybody else," said Sim Gershon, who is representing Hahne on an unrelated drug charge.

"He definitely has mental issues," Gershon added. "We weren't working out anything with the state attorney 's office, so he thought if he would assist the Sheriff's office that it would help him with the case that's still pending."

Authorities released affidavits that explain how the drugs were smuggled.

"Blotter papers and on the blotter paper, there was a narcotic, 25I-NBOme," wrote an investigator.

The synthetic drug, which is also known as "N-bomb," is similar to LSD.

Gershon said his client claimed to have information that could help authorities solve additional drug cases in South Florida. Instead of requesting a meeting with investigators, he mailed the letters to get their attention.

"He did the exact opposite of helping himself," he said. "This is not the way to help yourself."

The envelopes were intercepted by deputies before they made it into the jail. It's unclear what role the other two defendants played in this scheme.

All three defendants entered pleas of not guilty.
