Haiti's likely new president: Jovenel Moïse

Michel Martelly's protégé is likely to be next Haitian president

PORT-AU-PRINCE – Haitians voted for their new president on Nov. 20, and according to the latest preliminary results they have likely elected Jovenel Moïse, a banana exporter and protégé of former president Michel Martelly.

He is known as "Neg Bannan Nan" — Banana Man in Haitian Creole.

The election was a re-run from the October 2015 annulled election. The nine-member electoral council hasn't approved the results, which are expected to be certified Dec. 29.

Only about 21 percent of the voters turned out to elect their new president. In a country of more than 10 million, it is likely that only some 595,000 voters elected the new president.

ABOUT MOISE

In 2014, he launched the Agritrans banana exporting joint venture with the government on about 2,470 acres in northeast Haiti with a $6 million loan approved by Martelly's administration.

His first business venture was an auto parts company in Port-de-Paix, and he also distributed drinking water and created a project to bring renewable energy to several towns.
