Investigators: Nursing home fire intentionally set

Mattress fire prompts evacuations at Sinai Plaza Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Investigators say a fire that forced the evacuation of a Miami-Dade nursing home early Wednesday was intentionally set.

The incident occurred at the Sinai Plaza Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Northeast 2nd Avenue and 112th Street.

According to Miami-Dade police, 78-year-old Herbert Lowenthal set his bed on fire. He is not being charged with any crime, but was brought to the hospital for a mental evaluation.

Residents were allowed back into the building after the fire was extinguished.

No injuries were reported.
