Hundreds line up for legal advice on citizenship

Workshop at Miami-Dade college helps people face citizenship challenges

Downtown Miami, Fla. – Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado has declared June 22nd citizenship day and it kicked off Saturday morning with a swearing-in ceremony and workshop.

Hundreds stood in line early in the morning for the workshop held by the Florida Immigration Coalition and Catholic Legal Services. There, employees gave legal advice for those who are on the path to citizenship.

Scores of people right here in South Florida haven't even been able to apply for citizenship because they face several barriers, including a 680 dollar application fee plus the cost of a private lawyer.

However the workshop informed people how to face these challenges, and how they could possibly get the application fee waived.

The Citizenship Mega Workshop and Ceremony was held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Miami-Dade College's Wolfson campus in Downtown Miami.

60 people were sworn in Saturday morning.
