Jury selection began start Tuesday for the alleged shooter in the 2007 death of Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor.
Eric Rivera, now 23, faces life in prison instead of the death penalty because he was only 17 at the time.
Authorities say the former Miami Hurricane star was shot while confronting Rivera and others with a machete after they broke into his Miami-area home. Police say the group expected the home to be unoccupied because the Redskins were playing that weekend.
Instead, Taylor was home with a knee injury.
In addition to Rivera, four others faced charged. One has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and will testify against Rivera.
Trials for the others who face lesser charges are expected to come following Rivera's.
