Keeping cyclists safe on Rickenbacker Causeway

MIAMI – Commissioners have asked Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez to come up with a list of recommendations that they say could change for the better how drivers and cyclists share the road on the Rickenbacker Causeway.

The most significant change being considered is closing one lane of traffic on the causeway in each direction during the early-morning hours on weekends.

A few weeks ago, a group of cyclists invited Mayor Gimenez to ride with them. Commissioners say the board is open to other ideas, including more DUI checkpoints and increasing the number of police officers on the causeway.

Much of this is to the delight of cyclists who say that changes are really needed.

Commissioners are giving the mayor two months to come up a list of additional ideas.
