Derrick Pinto is accused of firing a rifle during an argument with his wife in Key Largo.

KEY LARGO, Fla. – A Key Largo man was arrested early Tuesday morning after he fired a gun during an argument with his wife, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Herrin said the woman called 911 about 1:40 a.m. to report that her husband had "fired a gun at her."

As Deputy Paul Rocha arrived at the Bowden Drive home, he saw Derrick Pinto get into a red Ford Mustang and drive away.

Pinto, 52, was stopped a short distance away and taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The woman told Sgt. Scott Ward that her husband had been drinking all day and took some pills that he bought from someone. She said they argued about the drugs and he grabbed a rifle, pointed it at her head with his finger on the trigger and said he would "solve this."

She said Pinto fired the gun, and the bullet struck the wall in their bedroom.

Pinto was also arrested on a charge of aggravated battery.
