LAKELAND, Fla. -

A Lakeland police officer is suspended with pay pending a criminal investigation.

The Ledger of Lakeland reports 31-year-old Julio Pagan was suspended Friday night.

Assistant Police Chief Larry Giddens acknowledged the investigation is of a criminal nature but wouldn't discuss the case. The suspension comes on the heels of an ongoing sexual misconduct scandal that has plagued the department. Officials say the cases are not related.

Pagan has worked for the Lakeland police since 2011. He previously worked for the nearby Bartow Police Department.

Lakeland Detective Nick Marolda, who heads the local police union, says he is aware of the situation and is waiting for the outcome of the criminal investigation before taking steps to represent Pagan.
