Law enforcement investigates Village of Pinecrest data breach

Data breach puts employees' personal information at risk

PINECREST, Fla. – A data breach in Pinecrest is being investigated by law enforcement.

Local 10 News reporter Ian Margol attempted to speak about the data breach on Monday with city leaders, but they would not answer his questions.

A resident with knowledge of the breach told Local 10 News that the breach affects only employees of the Village of Pinecrest, not the general public, and that staff at Village Hall have been receiving information about what they need to do in response.

Pinecrest Mayor Joe Corradino wouldn't speak to Margol in person, but sent an email, saying: "Relative to this topic, it would be inappropriate to talk at this time as we cannot confirm or deny any ongoing investigation."

Other village council members directed Margol to a city spokeswoman, who gave him the same answer: that she could not confirm or deny that an investigation is underway.

An FBI spokesman said it was not the agency's place to confirm or deny the existence of an investigation.

Tyler Technologies, a company that provides software to Pinecrest, had a little more to say about the matter.

"Tyler Technologies is aware of an investigation in South Florida that involves law enforcement agencies. We are providing our full cooperation in support of the investigation," a statement from the company said.

The data breach could put Village of Pinecrest employees' personal information at risk.
