MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - It has become the kind of drive that LeBron James probably wishes fans would forget.
The Miami Heat superstar has received all kinds of flak since posting a video showing police escorting him -- while driving the wrong way. He was on his way to Sun Life Stadium for Friday night's Jay Z and Justin Timberlake concert in Miami Gardens.
While many were angry with James, the majority of criticism was leveled at the police department involved in the escort.
The exact department was impossible to make out in the original video posted on Instagram, but on Monday the Miami-Dade Police Department confirmed that an off-duty officer working for Sun Life Stadium that night provided an escort for James.
"He received a call that LeBron James was stuck in traffic and to facilitate him to get him to the next intersection, which he did," said Miami-Dade Police Maj. Nancy Perez. "He drove in the opposite lane, which is against policy, so that's where the problem comes in."
Perez said the escort wasn't scheduled.
"He just took him (James) from one intersection to the next intersection, which is really less than even a mile," she added.
The Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating.
"We're looking into the fact of who notified this officer and who told him to take LeBron James to the next intersection," said Perez.
According to a TMZ.com report, Jay-Z refused to start the concert without James, which prompted police to escort him to the stadium.LeBron Escort Poll
