Leonardo DiCaprio to produce movie on Volkswagen emissions scandal

VW drivers continue to 'Call Christina' wondering what happens next

BOCA RATON, Fla. ā€“ The Volkswagen emissions scandal may be coming to the big screen, thanks to a movie star known for his environmental activism.

According to literary agents Marly Rusoff & Associates, Leonardo DiCaprio's production company may team up with Paramount Pictures to produce a movie.

The film would be based on a book proposal by New York Times European economics correspondent Jack Ewing "on the story of Volkswagen clean diesel fuel and how a 'more, better, faster' ethos fueled one of the greatest frauds in corporate history."

It's unknown if the Hollywood A-lister would star in the movie.

Last month, Volkswagen admitted that 11 million of its diesel vehicles are affected.

The "Call Christina" team is hearing from some of those drivers, including a woman named Pam from Boca Raton who said she still owes money on the Volkswagen diesel Jetta that she purchased in part based on the now-debunked promise of "clean diesel."

"I felt so lied to," she said. "They misrepresented it."

Pam would like to see the German car manufacturer buy back her car.

Local 10 News consumer advocate Christina Vazquez contacted Volkswagen about Pam's call to the "Call Christina" consumer protection hotline and on behalf of other viewers wondering what happens next.

The company has said technical crews are currently working on a remedy.Ā

Volkswagen has also created the website Volkswagen Diesel Information.

In a video message, Volkswagen Group of America Inc. President and CEO Michael Horn offers an apology and says, "We are cooperating closely with regulatory authorities to develop a remedy. Please know, and that's very important, that your vehicles remain safe and legal to drive. Owners don't need to take any action at this point of time. When we have a remedy in place, customers will be notified of the next steps immediately."

Many drivers like Pam worry about resale value. She also is concerned that the remedy on which Volkswagen is working could reduce fuel economy and performance.

"We have not had the opportunity to review all aspects of this matter. Indeed, the investigation is just beginning," Horn told the House Commission on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations last week. "These events are deeply troubling. I did not think that something like this was possible at the Volkswagen Group. We have broken the trust of our customers, dealerships and employees, as well as the public and regulators."
