Lobster mini-season underway; lasts through Thursday

Boaters can harvest up to 12 lobsters in most South Florida waters in 48-hour season

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – Lobster mini-season kicked off Wednesday morning as boaters hit the water to catch the spiny crustacean.

During the two-day event boaters can catch 12 lobsters per day per person, but only six per day in protected waters.

Federal and state officers joined the hunt to make sure spiny lobster catchers not only follow the law, but stay safe.

The carapace -- the lobster's head and body section-- must be three inches, and lobster lovers must avoid females with eggs.

Crandon Park Marina is packed with boats and some with several people on board brought in as many as 60 lobsters.
