Local 10 News' Victor Oquendo reunites with family in Cuba

Oquendo connected with his mother's godmother while covering Pope's visit

HAVANA – When Local 10 News anchor Victor Oquendo was sent to Havana to cover Pope Francis' visit, he didn't realize he would also get the chance to be reunited with family, but that's what happened this week.

While both of Oquendo's parents were born in Cuba (his father in Santiago and his mother in Havana), few members of their family still live there. He arrived in Havana with the address where his mother's godmother lived during the 1950's. Turns out, she still lives there.

Teresita Rodriguez told Oquendo all about his own family, providing him with information about the grandmother who died before he was born.

"She was the most magnificent person in life," she told him in Spanish.

Rodriguez also praised Oquendo's grandfather, who walked her down the aisle at her wedding.

She has lived in the same apartment in Luyano, Havana since 1953. His mother was able to visit her in 1992. One of her two children has also relocated to the United States.
