Broward Schools mourns death of longtime Hallandale Beach principal Carlton Campbell

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Students and staff across Broward County along with the Hallandale Beach community are mourning a beloved principal this week.

Carlton Campbell, a 57-year-old Gulfstream Academy of Hallandale Beach K-8 principal, who worked in the Broward school district for over three decades, died Wednesday.

The family of Campbell told Local 10 News they believe he had a “medical episode” before crashing his car on the way to work Wednesday morning.

They also said Campbell had no health issues and was “feeling fine” on the morning of the incident.

Carlton Campbell’s brother, Javen Campbell, a senior pastor at NOW Church in Pembroke Park, told Local 10 News his brother’s passing has left his entire community devastated.

“To be honest with you, it’s been high highs and low lows, he said. “It’s totally unexpected. Our hearts are broken.”

“We were raised to impact people’s lives beyond our jobs and beyond the 9-5, and that’s certainly what my brother did,” Javen Campbell added.

He says in addition to his long career with the Broward school district, Carlton Campbell was also a star athlete at Hallandale Beach High School, and also a pastor at NOW Church.

“Carlton was a giver,” his brother said. “If he could do anything for anybody, he would and he did do that.”

In a statement, Broward Schools Superintendent Peter Licata praised Campbell’s dedication to his students, noting that he has left an indelible mark on people’s lives.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Campbell was also a “proud” Hallandale High School graduate and would later become principal there in 2004.

“He enriched the lives of so many through his work, and we will be forever thankful for his service to our community,” the City of Hallandale Beach said in a post on X. “We share our deepest condolences with his family, friends, and the entire Gulfstream Academy community.”

Campbell is survived by his wife and three sons, as well as a large, loving family.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the crash.
