Downtown Miami parking garage closed after fire reveals structural concerns

MIAMI – Authorities shut down a six-story parking garage in downtown Miami Wednesday after firefighters noticed a possible structural issue as they responded to a blaze inside.

“A couple of vehicles” caught on fire at around 8 a.m. at the 256 NE Second St. garage, according to Miami Fire Rescue officials. No one was injured.

“I felt bad for the people that had their cars in that garage. They dealt with some hard days today,” witness George Mota said.

According to fire rescue officials, crews noticed cracking on the garage’s walls as they extinguished the fire, leading the agency to shut down the garage until an inspector can determine whether it is structurally safe.

The fire investigation continued into Wednesday afternoon. It’s not yet clear when the garage will reopen.
