BSO: Boy, 4, dies after being found in unconscious in SUV belonging to 3 C's Day Academy

Daycare shut down pending investigation

TAMARAC, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff's Office has identified the 4-year-old Tamarac boy died after being found unconscious in a vehicle belonging to a Broward County daycare center.

The incident happened at the Versailles apartment complex, 7806 N. Colony Cir. in Tamarac. The victim was identified as Jordan Coleman of 2651 N.W. 60th Way in Sunrise.

According to BSO, around 4:20 p.m. Thursday, Jordan was pulled from a 2002 Toyota Sequoia belonging to the 3C's Day Academy of Sunrise.

Miyoshi Agnew told Local 10's Ben Kennedy that she tried to save the child by giving him CPR and clearing his mouth, but she couldn't get him to wake up.

"He just looked lifeless, he looked lifeless and he had a whole bunch of mucus in his mouth," Agnew said.

Paramedics also attempted to revive the child and transported him to Broward Health Coral Springs hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Jordan's grandfather, Pastor Willie Coleman, said words cannot express his family's pain.

"Jordan, our grandson, was a great child and unfortunately he left too soon and the way he left was upsetting," Coleman said.

The Broward County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy Thursday. The cause and manner of death have not been determined and are pending further investigation.

BSO detectives say they will continue to investigate the circumstances that led to Jordan's death and how he was left unattended in the hot SUV.

"Be careful, the only thing I can say is be careful. Know who you are dealing with," Coleman said.

The BSO Child Protective Investigations Section is conducting its own investigation into Jordan's death.

It's alleged that Jordan and seven other children from the Sunrise daycare were brought to a Tamarac apartment because the owner of 3 C's Day Academy had more children at the center than a state license allowed. One of the children at the scene told witnesses the kids were napping upstairs and they forgot Jordan.

Local 10 has learned that in its 2011 - 2012 inspection report, 3 C's Day Academy failed to comply with personnel training, background screening, general safety requirements and license requirements.

On Friday afternoon, the Florida Department of Children & Families issued this statement:

"In Broward County, Child Protective Investigation work is performed by the Broward County Sheriff's Office and child care licensing is performed by Broward County. They can best answer questions about details in this case and are the repository of records.
We are working very closely with our partners to make sure that these children are safe and that anyone who has committed a crime is held responsible to the fullest extent of the law. This tragic case serves as a dark reminder of the dangers of leaving a child unattended for any amount of time in a vehicle. It is also a sad reminder that parents should fully investigate the background of day care facilities."

Meanwhile, the 3Cs Day Academy, which is located at 2125 N.W. 72nd Terr. in Sunrise, is now closed.
