CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Miami quarterback Preston Dewey says he is no longer able to play football because of a back injury.

Dewey made the announcement on Tuesday. He signed with Miami in February 2012 and never threw a pass for the Hurricanes. Dewey says he met with doctors in both Miami and Texas to discuss his injury, and will have surgery in December.

Dewey, from Austin, Texas, says he will remain at Miami to complete his education. The 16th-ranked Hurricanes will continue honoring his scholarship.

Dewey says this is "a very sad time for me, but I will continue to be a supporter of this team and these coaches."
