FHP trooper recovering at Broward Health Medical Center

Crash shut down northbound I-95 for hours

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the trooper involved in a Friday afternoon crash that shut down I-95 northbound at Commercial Boulevard. Felecia Andrews, 33, was listed in serious, but stable condition at Broward Health Medical Center on Saturday morning.

Trooper Andrews has worked for the Florida Highway Patrol for three years.

According to FHP, Andrews was in the median responding to a different three car accident just north of Commercial Boulevard when Derek Adam Nelson, 33, crashed his pick up truck into her cruiser around 5 p.m. Her car was then pushed into the other three cars that were involved in the first crash.

Andrews and Nelson were both airlifted to area hospitals. Three other people were also taken to the hospital, by ambulance.

The northbound lanes of I-95 were shut down at Commercial Boulevard for several hours after the crash. They did not reopen until 9 p.m.

Detectives are still trying to figure out why Nelson was speeding along the median. They're also checking to see if he was under the influence.

As of Saturday morning, no charges have been filed.
