FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police identified a motorcyclist killed in a hit-and-run crash Sunday afternoon.
Kevin Gilliam Jr. was headed east on West Broward Boulevard when a Ford Focus making a left turn at Northwest 36th Avenue entered his lane, police say.
Gilliam, 29, hit the side of the Focus and flew off his motorcycle. He was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died.
"Everybody loved him. He was special because he was my heart," said his mother, Estelle Bashford-Hyman. "We're basically trying to deal with it the best we can but it's very hard because it was too sudden. No one expected this, and it's just hard."
The driver of the Focus ran away after the crash.
"If he had just stuck around and called 911 or call somebody for help instead of being a coward and running away from killing someone's child -- because that's what he did. He took my son away from me and that's my one son," said Bashford-Hyman.
Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Fort Lauderdale police at 954-828-5125.
