Gina Marks sentenced to 10 years of probation

Woman who scammed elderly man out of retirement money accepts plea deal

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A South Florida woman accused of scamming an elderly man out of thousands of dollars accepted a plea deal Wednesday that will keep her out of jail.

Gina Marks, 26, was sentenced to 10 years of probation.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said Marks befriended Clifford Rogerson, 86, outside a Pompano Beach store and got him to hand over about $26,000 for rent and a sewing machine with the promise she would pay it back.

After emptying Rogerson's retirement account, Marks vanished.

Marks eventually turned herself in and paid back the money in full. She had nothing to say as she left the courtroom.

As part of the plea deal, Marks cannot own a credit card, work with disabled people or in the financial industry, and must submit her financial history every 12 months.
