PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – A South Florida student has won a four-year scholarship in a statewide competition for Black History Month.
Lyndsey Thomas, a student at Franklin Academy in Pembroke Pines, was awarded the Florida College Plan scholarship Tuesday during a ceremony at the governor's mansion. Thomas was the only middle school student in the state to be awarded for the essay she submitted.
Thomas received the scholarship at the Black History Month reception from Gov. Rick Scott.
Kayla Gonzalez of Coral Reef Elementary was also recognized in the student art competition. Michelle Wright, a teacher at Miami Lakes K-8 Center, was honored with the Excellence in Education award.
