Police: Man lies to housekeeper, steals from hotel room

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Miami Beach police are looking for a man who stole $20,000 worth of property and cash from a hotel room on June 8.

A housekeeper for the hotel had finished cleaning the room when a man came inside and showed her a hotel key card, police say.

When she asked if he was staying in the room, he said it was his mother's room.

Two women visiting from Brazil later returned to the room and found $1,800 in cash, $10,000 in jewelry, an iPad, credit cards, IDs, and suitcase missing.

According to Miami Beach police, the burglary might be an inside job.

"Not only did he have the card, but he also knew which room to go in," said Robert Hernandez with the Miami Beach Police Department.  "There's a lot of rooms in that hotel, and he happened to get the room that has $20,000 worth of property and cash."
