Insurance seekers line up to meet health care deadline

Monday is deadline to apply for health insurance under Affordable Care Act

MIAMI – At the Borinquen Medical Center in Miami, a steady line of insurance seekers tried to beat the deadline to apply for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

Gary Pierre waited for two hours Monday. He has a job with insurance, but he doesn't like his current plan, calling it too expensive.

Like the thousands trying to beat the deadline, Pierre hit a roadblock.

HealthCare.gov was plagued by glitches that temporarily left it inoperable to users.

With the website malfunctioning, many worried they will be subject to fines on their next tax date.

In 2014, the fee is 1 percent of a person's annual income or $95 per person, whichever is higher.

The fee for uninsured children is $47.50 each, with a maximum of $285 per family.

By 2016, those fees increase to $695 per person or 2.5 percent of the annual income.
