Miami police officer taken to hospital after crash

Police-involved crash reported at Southwest 22nd Avenue, Southwest Second Street

MIAMI ā€“ A Miami police officer was injured Thursday morning in a traffic crash.

The crash was reported at Southwest 22nd Avenue and Southwest 22nd Street.

"All of a sudden, I heard a lot of bumpers being hit, one after the other," David Besterman, who was involved in the crash, said.Ā 

Besterman was behind the wheel of a Nissan, the third car involved in the chain reaction crash along with a Scion.

The police officer apparently was forced to swerve into another lane.

"When I turned around I saw the brown car swiping us also, and I looked back and saw someone falling out of the car," Besterman said.Ā 

Miami police said the officer was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center. They said he suffered a cut to his head and is expected to be fine.Ā 

No other injuries were reported.Ā 

Police said the officer was in an unmarked car.

They said four vehicles were involved, one of which stopped in the area, but not in the exact location of the crash.Ā 

Authorities said one of the drivers, who possibly caused the crash, fled the scene.Ā 

Southwest 22nd Street was closed between Southwest 22nd and Southwest 23rd avenues for several hours during the investigation.

Police said searching for the fourth driver.

Investigators are expected to look through red light cameras in the area to determine whether the cameras captured the crash.Ā
