MIAMI – Two elderly people woke up to a fire in their home in Miami's Model City neighborhood early on Monday.
Firefighters responded to the home on NW 66th St. near NW 10th Ave. just after 3 a.m.
An 85-year-old woman could not leave the house due to disabilities, and a visually-impaired elderly man who was also living in the house had to run to get help. A neighbor called 911.
Both made it out uninjured because the fire was slow moving, but the home sustained smoke damage.
The American Red Cross was called to help the victims.
The official cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire rescue says a smoke alarm may have saved these people's lives, a reminder on why you should have a working smoke alarm in your home.
