Jerry Cunningham suffered brain injury, broken bones; He will be released from Jackson Memorial Hospital Thursday

MIAMI – Jackson Memorial Hospital on Wednesday released video showing a 14-year-old boy who was run over by a Broward County Transit bus undergoing rehabilitation.

Doctors discussed the recovery of Jerry Cunningham, who suffered a brain injury and multiple broken bones on May 10 when he was run over in Pompano Beach.

"My son is a miracle because he's alive," said his father, Jerry Cunningham. "Nobody knows how."

Cunningham spent a month in a Broward hospital, unable to walk and talk, before he was transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital for rehabilitation.

"The second day he was here, he called me dad," said the boy's father.

"I saw him the first day when he came in," added Dr. Jackson Cohen. "He didn't know where he was. He wasn't answering questions. He was very confused. He was agitated. He wasn't sleeping at all."

"Over time, he's made amazing improvements," said Dr. Seema Khurana.

Doctors said Cunningham's memory is slowly returning and he's able to communicate. But he still has a long road to recovery.

"Although he is walking, he could easily be lost," said Jennifer Rey, a speech therapist. "Although he is moving, he doesn't know where he's going."

Cunningham will continue outpatient therapy after he is discharged Thursday.

"I feel like dancing," added Cunningham's father. "Oh God, he's amazing. He gets better every day."

Last month, the county suspended the driver who ran over Cunningham.
