TALLAHASSEE, FL - A South Florida lawmaker is asking state representatives to review his proposal that would make it legal for cities to ban smoking on public property. As the law stands now, only the state can impose such a ban.
Representative Bill Hager from Boca Raton argues that the state of Florida should empower cities and counties to make their own decisions concerning bans, including smoking bans on public beaches.
This issue has been approached before. Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach both considered smoking bans on public beaches before. Ultimately, commissioners decided it would be too hard to enforce and "no smoking" signs were put in place.
