MIAMI – Hundreds of athletes are biking, running, and swimming through the streets and waters of Miami Sunday morning as they compete in the Publix Escape to Miami Triathlon.
The triathletes began their challenge on Escape Island in Biscayne Bay at 7 a.m. From there, each of them had to swim .9 miles, coming ashore at Margaret Pace Park.

Once they reached the downtown Miami park, they began the 24.8 biking portion of the race, which takes them across the Julia Tuttle Causeway and through Miami Beach. The competition ends with a 6.2 mile running course along the MacArthur Causeway (to Star Island and back).
Among the more than 2,000 participants are several previous medal winners. Isabel Olivas will defend the title she's held onto for four years in the women's division. The men's competition will put two runners-up from previous years against one another.
A Sprint distance of the Triathlon will also take place Sunday morning. Participants of that race will take part in a 1/4 mile swim, 13 mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run.
