BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – A man who lost three limbs in a motorcycle crash is riding in the Tour de Broward to raise money for the hospital that helped him during his recovery.
The crash two years ago forever changed the life of 23-year-old Moise Brutus.
"I remember taking my helmet off. First thing I said was, 'My life is over,'" said Brutus.
"He was a young man in the prime of his life and all of a sudden he's faced with having three limbs missing, which psychologically is a great challenge," said Dr. Alan Novick with Memorial Healthcare Systems.
Brutus resisted the urge to give up and instead chose to overcome.
"As time went on, I got this inner happiness that I was able to get. I realized I was pretty much the same -- having no legs and having one arm doesn't change a person," said Brutus.
"He's the ultimate example of bad things happen and you can turn it around," added Novick.
Brutus has been training to ride in the 60k bicycle event in the Tour de Broward.
"I feel like right now, whatever happens, I'll be able to deal with it. This accident set my foundation. Now the rest is up to me," said Brutus.
Brutus volunteers at Memorial Hospital. He hopes to someday compete in the Paralympics.
Brutus will be among an estimated 1,000 cyclists participating in the Tour de Broward on Feb. 24.
All proceeds will benefit the Cardiac Center at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. This year's fundraising goal is $300,000.
