PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – The southbound lanes of US 27 were closed at Johnson Street, as crews cleaned up a crash that killed one person early Thursday morning.
Just after 5 a.m., a box truck collided with a tractor trailer. Pembroke Pines Police confirmed that the driver of the box truck was airlifted to a hospital where he died. The name of the 29-year-old victim has not yet been released.

According to Sergeant Carris Scott, both trucks had a green light when the box truck rear-ended the 18-wheeler. The driver of tractor trailer, 43-year-old Marshall Barber, was not hurt and is said to be cooperating with police.
The box truck was transporting watermelon when it crashed. As of 7:45 a.m., crews were still at the scene cleaning up the produce that had spilled out onto the road.
